Owing to the Spanish threat by 1587 a gun emplacement had been built in the outer bailey of the medieval castle.

Gatehouse Comments

Their are some slight earthworks of this battery which, presumably, in original form was mainly constructed of earth filled wicker gabions. One of the two original cannons (demi-culverins) for this work still exists, on a reconstructed carriage, and is in the Inner Bailey of Pevensey Castle.
