Gatehouse Comments

Site situated on the left bank of the River Ellen opposite Netherhall Tower. Was Netherhall a separate manor from Maryport or was the defensive but physical restricted motte site (Maryport Castle Hill) abandoned for a site with better access to a hunting park itself abandoned for another site on the other side of the river? Was this a ancillary hunting lodge or park keepers residence for Netherhall, rather than a manor house?
