A stonehouse or bastle was noted in the 1603 survey of fortified places at Gilsand:

NY550503. 'Tho. Moses a tenement and yard (beinge a stonehouse)...' and 'Simon Beecham a tenement and yard (beinge also a stonehouse)...' The two barns to the north of the vicarage are the site of these stonehouses. Surveyed in 1984 with plan. (PastScape ref. Perriam and Robinson)

Gatehouse Comments

The Rectory is another pele-house in the same terrace of buildings, although not directly connected, somewhat wider and very slightly differently aligned.
